My January Purchases

2015 is the year of saving (again) for us. We have devised a plan where we each have a set monthly allowance, and the rest of our money goes towards bills and the savings account. I feel that having a set amount available to spend each month will make me more aware of what I'm buying, and help me decide whether I actually need the items I'm buying, before I actually make the purchase. I also think that each purchase will have a little more meaning to it, and I will appreciate my monthly purchases so much more!

In these monthly posts, I will be sharing any beauty, fashion or homeware purchases I've made during the month, but please note that homeware items are a joint purchase, so they don't come out of our own allowances.
Now, despite not having gone out and shopped the January sales, I did manage to place a few little online orders this month.
PC290006
FoM Cosmetics Age Defying Hand Scrub, £12.50 £7/60g and Revitalising Eye Care Balm (sample), £11 £3/10ml
Now, technically these items were ordered and paid for in December, but unfortunately the order never arrived, despite being sent before Christmas, and so replacements were sent out during January. I thought I'd include them as this is the first of my monthly purchases posts. Both items were well reduced in price, and I'd been eyeing up the hand scrub for ages! I'm hoping a weekly treatment of this will help keep my hands from getting too dry and chapped. I'm still on the lookout for a new eye care product, so I ordered the sample size of the eye care balm to test out, as the full size (25ml) is pretty expensive at £28.
You'll be happy to know that the sale is still ongoing, so grab yourself a bargain while you can!

Lulu & Boo Orange Blossom Toning Mist, £14.95/100ml
As you may know, I stopped using a toner for a few weeks, to see of it had any effects on my skin. Unfortunately, I did start to get more blemishes, so I decided to look at more natural options, and decided on this orange blossom one, which is aimed at my skin type. It's a lovely, fragrant and refreshing toner, which helps swipe away any residue left by make-up or cleansers.
PC290012
Salcura Zeoderm Skin Repair Moisturiser, £15.99/100ml
My hands really do take a battering in the winter, so I usually turn to Salcura to aid me in getting my hands back to good condition. They target specific skin problems, so there are lots of products to choose from. I went for this moisturiser, as it is recommended for people who suffer from contact dermatitis, which I do. Free from all the usual nasties, it has a pleasant scent from the mix of essential oils, and leaves my hands feeling hydrated and soft. It is a little on the greasy side, so I use this before bed.
PC130019
Tangle Teezer Original Detangling Hairbrush, £10.99
I've had the compact version for a while, and really wanted to buy the full size, original brush. I used a Boots giftcard to make this purchase. It works really well with my current hair length and I find it easy to hold in my hand. Wouldn't use any other type of hairbrush!
Soap & Glory Hand Food Hand Cream, £5.50/125ml
I purchased this with my Boots advantage card points. It may not be the most natural hand product, but I just love the gorgeous scent and the moisturising properties.
PC080017
Maxwell Williams Set Of 3 Glass Candy Jars, £20 £7.99 (now £5.99)
So, these are advertised as candy jars, but I thought they would be perfect for storing my coffee, tea and sugar in! I've been looking for new storage containers for a while, and these really appealed to me; there's something I just love about actually seeing what's stored inside!
PC080020PC080024
BHS Set Of 6 Glitter Silver Coasters With Case, £8 £4 (out of stock)
Again, I've been on the look-out for new coasters. Initially I wanted mosaic-style, silver cracked glass ones, but these silver glitter ones were much more reasonably priced, plus there's less chance of breakages with these!
PC070014
Forever 21 Off Duty Tee, £7.25 £3.99, Touch Of Glam Cardigan, £19.75 £12.99 and Faux Gem Floral Statement Necklace, £14
I bought the t-shirt in brick red, as I don't really own much red clothing, so it's something different, plus the simple, laid-back style will work well in my casual wardrobe.
I need some more options for layering and keeping me warm indoors, so this knit cardigan stood out to me. The tassels are unusual and will add a little interest to my outfit. I had to send this back as it was damaged, so I'm waiting for an exchange. I hope it arrives soon! Update: they refunded me for the cardigan - no exchange!
PC070016
This necklace is just gorgeous, isn't it? I hope you don't want a better reason than that for me purchasing it, because I don't have one!

This is where things got a little naughty... I was barely half way through the month before I'd used up my allowance. First lesson learnt; don't use my allowance up so quickly! I felt like I was on a spending ban! I don't really have any valid excuses, but, basically, I really wanted to get the next two items before I went to Scotland (2nd February), and before they sold out, so the next two purchases will be coming out of February's allowance!
PC290014
Pieces Kostal Tube Scarf, RRP £16 £11
This snood has been on my virtual wish list for ages! It's enormous! A little ridiculous, actually... Will be working on ways to wear this without looking like I'm about to embark on a treacherous expedition to the Antarctic - although, let's face it - I am going to Scotland!
PC280009edd
Dune Structured Handbag, RRP £59 £29.99 (out of stock)
Handbags don't stick around too long with me, so it was time for a change, and so I bought a new one! It's a lovely faux leather one in a neutral colourway, more compact than I'm used to, but I can still fit in all my essentials!

Did you make any new purchases this month?

January At A Glance + A Few Of My Favourite Things

Overall, January has actually been a pretty good month! We've spent time with good friends, gone out for a meal or two, started to get back into healthy eating. Work has been busy and I'm pretty fed up of it at the moment, but at least I've got some proper time off coming up. I haven't done too well in the exercise department; I went for a few long walks, did a minimal amount of spinning, and discovered squats. After our time in Scotland next month, I will be starting the 30 Day Shred challenge!

And on to my favourites this month:
Since receiving them on Christmas day, I have not been able to put The Cousins O'Dwyer book trilogy by Nora Roberts down! I'm currently nearing the end of the second book! They are brilliant. I may post a review about them when I'm done.
We've binged watched True Detective and really enjoyed it! This was actually my second attempt at watching it, as I wasn't that keen after watching the first episode a while back, but I'm so glad I gave it a second chance! Great acting from Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson.
PC290001
I re-purchased Soap & Glory's Hand Food Hand Cream and have been enjoying the gorgeous scent and lovely, soft hands.
I got stuck in to my Ferrero Rocher stash that I received at Christmas; there are not many left, I must admit. Although, I have been very generous and given Dean a few here and there!
PC290002
This month I've been enjoying drinking Twinings Relaxing Camomile & Spearmint Herbal Tea. It's great of an evening, to help you unwind, but I also find it's quite refreshing first thing in the morning, as the spearmint gives it that extra kick.

As these monthly posts are a time for reflection, I'd like to take this opportunity to share with you some very unfortunate news. After months of inactivity and no social interaction, I became a little concerned about one of my blogging friends, Lizzie from the Head Full Of Flowers blog, and did a little searching online. It was with disbelief that I stumbled upon an obituary entry from her parents; Lizzie sadly passed away last October. She was only 18 years old. Although I never had the pleasure of meeting Lizzie in person, we did have a really good friendship, made through our love of blogging, and she was such a kind and thoughtful person.

So, with that said, I want to remind people, and myself, that life can be short, and we should all savour every moment of it, live life to its fullest, and don't sweat the small stuff.

We went out for dinner at a local pub - The White Horse in Hinton St. Mary - for my Mother-in-law's birthday on Saturday! We had a great time and the food was delicious. I had a starter of mozzarella dippers with relish, tandoori chicken with mint yoghurt and spiced rice for my main, and the most delicious, moist sticky toffee pudding with vanilla ice-cream! Mmm...

Updating Your Home On A Budget: The Bedroom

This is a series showing how you can update the rooms in your home without breaking the bank! It's amazing what a few new accessories can do! I think starting with a blank canvas and a neutral base is the way to go; this allows you to add and remove colours and textures in the form of accessories, with ease. Check out how to update your bathroom here.

I feel that bedrooms should be a haven of relaxation, romance and serenity. Calm, soft colour tones are best for the bedroom. Lots of textures are the key to that balance of comfort and luxury.

Review: LUSH Percup Massage Bar

PC220005PC220007
LUSH Percup Massage Bar, £6.50

With whole coffee beans, coconut oil, shea butter, cocoa butter, jojoba oil, and vanilla absolute, this massage bar promises to awaken your senses and deeply hydrate your skin.

I was first drawn to this product because of the coffee element; I really love coffee and all things coffee scented! Well, this doesn't smell as expected. It has quite a bitter coffee scent and it took a little getting used to, but the vanilla adds that hint of sweetness.
After warming in your hands, use the bar or your hands (I used the bar itself) to smooth all over your body, rubbing in all of the nourishing oils. As it's really oily and takes hours to completely sink in, I prefer to use this of an evening and let it work its magic overnight. The scent lingers until you wash it off the next day.
The softening effects are wonderful! You are left with soft, smooth and hydrated skin for days. No dry patches in sight! The coffee beans help to boost circulation and may also help to reduce cellulite. From my experience, so far, I think this massage bar will last ages!

Ingredients:
Fair Trade Organic Cocoa Butter, Fair Trade Shea Butter, Whole Coffee Bean, Organic Jojoba Oil, Perfume, Extra Virgin Coconut Oil, Vetivert Oil, Fair Trade Vanilla Absolute, Roasted Cocoa Extract, Coriander Oil, Caffeine Powder, Coumarin, Geraniol, Limonene, Linalool

I definitely want to try out some of the other massage bars - particularly Dirty and Therapy! I liked the effects of Percup, but due to the unusual scent, I wouldn't re-purchase this one.

Have you tried any massage bars from LUSH?

I feel that bathrooms should be light and airy with luxurious touches. This is the one room I'd keep fairly free of bright colours, keeping a more neutral palette which is easy on the eye. This room should be free of visible clutter, and have a relaxing atmosphere. Showcase your most favourite bathing products, along with some stylish accessories.

Review: Bomb Cosmetics Mint Choc Chip Cleansing Shower Butter

PB280024PB280029
Bomb Cosmetics Mint Choc Chip Cleansing Butter, £7.99/320g

I received this product as a gift at Christmas. After enjoying their candles, I was eager to try some of their beauty products.
This is a shower product in a semi-solid form which, when massaged onto the skin, melts into a creamy lather. The scent is a refreshingly minty affair, with an undercurrent of chocolate, giving it that unmistakeable mint chocolate chip fragrance. I did find, however, there was an underlying, general "soapy" scent.
The product melts into a wonderful lather and a little goes such a long way! The shelf life for this big tub is only three months, and I'm doubtful that I'll have finished it in such a short time, even if I used it daily! I found it did soften my skin slightly, but it didn't have any moisturising properties on my skin, as I still have dry patches.

Unfortunately, I did have a minor skin reaction (non-itchy, small, red blotches) to this product, so I will only be using it a couple of times a week. Looking at the ingredients list, I've highlighted the ones I feel people need to be more wary of, especially if you have sensitive skin like myself, and suffer from irritations from products easily. And although at a glance, the fairly short ingredients list doesn't look too bad, with further research into some of the highlighted ingredients, some are considered to be proven irritants and are best avoided. This particular product is SLS and paraben-free, but the alternative ingredients used can often be just as bad, unfortunately.

I really love the concept of this product, and if you're not too bothered about ingredients used and you don't suffer with sensitive skin, then you may find you really enjoy this product. It's all down to personal preference at the end of the day.

Have you tried any of these shower butters?

Ingredients:
Aqua (Water), Glycerin, Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate, Sorbitol, Propylene Glycol, Disodium Lauryl Sulfosuccinate, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Fruit Butter, Parfum (Fragrance), Sodium Chloride, Phenoxyethanol, Ethylhexylglycerin, Boswelia Carterii (Frankincense) Oil, Camelina Sativa (Gold of Pleasure) Seed Oil, Tetrasodium Etidronate, Pentasodium Pentetate, Benzyl Benzoate, Limonene, CI 19140 (Yellow 5), CI 42090

Re-purchase? No.

The Weekly Wish List

http://oi58.tinypic.com/122duer.jpg

1. Forage & Find Intense Purple Sterling Silver Statement Ring, £35
Isn't this ring just beautiful? I love the shade of purple and I think this would totally add the perfect finishing touch to a casual outfit, but also to complement an evening dress.
2. Pieces Kostal Tube Scarf, £16 £11
This has been sitting in my virtual basket for a while now. I will buy it, but not till next month - I just hope it's still available by then!
3. Next Heart Sink Caddy, £8
I really hate having cloths, scourers and washing-up liquid just lying around in an unorganised fashion. I'd like mine to have a home - preferably something as cute as this handy little item! Pretty bargainous at under £10, too.
4. Ted Baker Polly EDT Purse Spray Fragrance, £15
I absolutely love Ted Baker packaging! Who doesn't?! With notes such as berries, jasmine and musk, this fragrance sounds heavenly! I think these pretty perfumes would make such a lovely, affordable gift.
5. Dorothy Perkins Slingback Pointed Court Shoes, £23
I don't actually need these, but I was really drawn to the vibrant shade of red; a colour I don't really experiment with much. Wouldn't these finish off a lovely Valentine's Day outfit nicely?!

Outfit: Blue Floral Fancy

Saturday evening saw us head over to our friends' house to have a belated New Year's celebration! We had a great evening, ending up playing Monopoly (I won!) and Scrabble, and heading to bed around 4am! I have to say, after a couple of glasses of Buck's Fizz and one too many Disaronno & Cokes, I was feeling a little delicate the next morning, but nothing a bacon buttie and lazy Sunday couldn't sort out.

Review: OGX Revitalising Awapuhi Ginger Shampoo and Conditioner

PC100026PC100028
OGX Reviving Awapuhi Ginger Shampoo, £6.99/385ml and OGX Reviving Awapuhi Ginger Conditioner, £6.99/385ml

When they are on offer, I usually pick up some more OGX products to try out. Last time I was in Superdrug, I picked up these awapuhi ginger ones; mainly due to the eye-pleasing packaging, plus I was curious to try them. I wasn't sure I'd like the scent due to the ginger element, and me not being a big fan of spicy scents. This range is designed with dry, coarse hair in mind and also includes a Rapid Recovery Hair Mask and Penetrating Hair Oil - both of which I'd love to try!

The scent, in fact, is beautiful! A warm, sweet floral aroma makes for a truly enjoyable and relaxing experience. With the contents boasting ingredients such as Hawaiian awapuhi ginger extract, coconut oil, avocado oil, cocoa butter and keratin proteins, you just know your hair is in for a treat!

The formula of the shampoo is thick, silky and has a light pink, pearlised appearance. It creates a great, creamy lather, with even coverage. The conditioner's formula is thick, creamy and light pink, with a lightly whipped consistency. This also creates a great lather and an even coverage is easily achieved.

Even after just one use, these SLS and paraben-free products immediately left my hair soft, silky and shiny. Oh, and smelling gorgeous, of course! Dry, frizzy hair is tamed into beautifully soft and healthy-looking locks.

Have you tried these or any other varieties from OGX?

The Weekly Wish List

There will be a few changes here on the blog this year; I will be trialling a small weekly wish list, as well as sharing my monthly purchases at the end of each month. I will also be stopping the monthly empties as I feel they can be a little boring and repetitive, plus they don't get much attention!

Please let me know if there is anything you'd like to see on the blog this year!

1. Lulu & Boo Jasmine & Vanilla Body Lotion, £25/200ml

2. George @ Asda Mixed Stitch Jumper, £16
I feel like this has a sort of 60's vibe going on. I love the colourway as it's a perfect blank canvas for adding pretty pastel accessories! The neckline looks pretty snuggly, too.

This pretty piece has a vintage, shabby chic feel to it and would look great in our front hall to give it a stylish update. The price is very reasonable, too.
