(Part One | Part Two | Part Three | Part Four | Part Five)

23rd May 2013:
We got up early at 6:30am and had breakfast in our room. When we were ready, we met in the theatre at around 8am for our Ålesund Highlights excursion which started at 8:30am. Our guide today was Anya who actually lives in Ålesund.

There were lots of little wooden huts and it was really interesting to see how the Vikings had lived.
We then saw a collection of Viking ships and then looked around an indoor museum of other Norwegian artefacts.

We then had a short bus tour around Ålesund with Anya telling us about the huge fire that occurred in January 1904. It had started in a factory after a cow had apparently kicked a torch and it wiped out hundreds of homes. There had also been a storm the previous day, so with strong winds the fire spread even further. Apparently, only one woman was killed - she'd gone back inside her home to get her cat. The town was re-built in it's wonderful Art Nouveau style. There are flame-shaped plaques in the town marking where the fire started and where it ended.

After this bus tour we had a look around the shops and then made our way back to the ship.
We went for lunch in the Windjammer then wandered around for a while. We went up to the pool deck and had an ice-cream cone each from the self-serve kiosk, Sprinkles. We relaxed on the swinging benches in the Solarium and then went back to our room for a rest.
Our room was late being made-up and a guy showed up in place of Wendy and told us she was not well.
The ship was very rocky as the sea was really rough. I felt really sick so I had a sleep for about one hour then we caught the 9pm showing of The Graffiti Classics; a comedic string quartet who were absolutely amazing! Very talented and very amusing. The double bass player was Irish and was the main comedian. He got the audience involved a lot and didn't want us to leave. We purchased two of their albums after the show then returned to our room. We had a late dinner in our room via room service as I was feeling much better. At 12:30am we headed out to the Solarium to test out the whirlpool hot tub! It was lovely and we had the place all to ourselves. We had to get out at 1am as it was being cleaned. We went to bed around 2am. Our towel animal tonight was a snake!
