The Norwegian Cruise Diaries: Day Three | Personal

(Part One | Part Two)

20th May 2013:
Our alarm woke us at 8am and we opened the curtains to this amazing view! It was a lovely, sunny day. We got ourselves ready as quickly as possible and then headed outside to take some photos of the beautiful Norwegian scenery.

We then went for breakfast in the Windjammer and then headed outside again until we arrived at our first port of call; Flåm. We arrived here at 12:30pm which was half an hour earlier than expected.

As we pulled into port, it was really weird seeing the locals taking pictures of us when we were so amazed by the wonderful surroundings. We went back to our room to warm up as it had been raining and there was a very cold wind. The temperature was around 14-17°C in Flåm. The weather in Norway can go from hot to cold very quickly! We set foot on land at 1:30pm and had a look around.

There were many souvenir shops to browse and in one of the shops there were lots of real furs for sale. I was surprised to see this at first, but I believe real animal furs are legal and popular in Norway. Not something I agree with at all.

We checked out the supermarket, Coop Marked. We then went back to our ship. It took a while to get back on-board as you have to go through security every time you come back on the ship. We got back to our room at 3pm.

We went to the Windjammer for some snacks and then met with our excursion group at 4:45pm in the theatre. Each group were given numbered/coloured stickers for the appropriate excursion. We had booked the Tvinde Valley & Waterfall excursion but somehow ended up being given the wrong stickers and we ended up going on the Flåm railway excursion. We were actually really happy about this because this had been our first choice but it was booked up when we checked!
So, we were guided onto a train and we went on a journey through tunnels in the mountainside which were excavated by hand! It was really difficult to get decent photos on a moving train!

We stopped off at the Kjosfossen Waterfall to take some photos which was amazing!

We then carried on our train journey until we arrived at our destination; The Vatnahalsen Hotel.

The hotel was lovely and the host was really friendly. We sat in a lounge and had waffles with homemade raspberry jam and cream and a coffee. The jam was so good that we purchased a jar to take home! We walked around outside for a while and were picked up by the train and taken back to our ship.

It was 8:30pm by the time we got back on-board. We got ready quickly and then headed over to Studio B, the ice rink, for the ice show, Freeze Frame, which started at 9:15pm. I ordered a Drink of The Day which was a Scandinavian Strawberry cocktail; very sweet and delicious! I had Dean's too as it was too sweet for him! We weren't allowed to photograph or film the show, but I can promise you it was brilliant! Their costumes and the music started in 1940's style and ended in 1980's. We got back to our room by 10:10pm.
We decided to order Room Service at 11:25pm. I ordered pizza, fried chicken and a dessert. Dean ordered pizza, a steak sandwich and a cheese platter. We thought the pizza we were ordering were single slices but this is what arrived at our door:

They must have been thinking, "Greedy buggers!" haha! Oops, we learned our lesson. The food was really nice though. The hot chocolate that we ordered was so good! We watched TV for a while then were in bed by 1am.
